DAVID BLAINE is being roasted in the Magic Community for a "Dive" that went nowhere. Sites like MAGIC CAFE and more are buzzing with reactions ranging from disbelief to dissappointment over the final stunt that left many confused...
After 3 days suspended upside down, Blaine was supposed to have "Dived" onto a graphic art target 40 feet below him with some sort of unnanounced surprise to follow. 7.5 million viewers sat through 2+ hours of live broadcast waiting some type of amazing climax.... which never really came.
Blaine explained this morning on REGIS & KELLY that he was supposed to have dived downward (we gather with accompanying pyrothechnics) and been "saved" at the last second by huge Flotilla of overhead balloons that would whip him out into the darkness and out of site. Instead, winds delayed the drop, and when he finally did fall no lights of pyrotechnics appeared. Millions of viewers around the world saw a safety tethercord slow his descent and The magician bobbing around the ground waiting for the balloons to be manually released (which they finally were).
Blaine Notes that winds delayed the ending, but that ABC insisted he wait for a window of opportunity and continue the stunt. Finally David took the fall so as not to delay anticipation any longer, and the outcome was not what anyone would have hoped for. The (obviously well-rehearsed announcer) still yelled over long-shots of the crowd "WOW! David Blaine has Dissapeared into the night!" Uh...Hah?...
GREG GABAYLO just performed Hypnotism at the 58th HILO COUNTY FAIR, Sept 19 & 20th. Gabaylo says he has Hypnotism shows lined up for California, Vegas, Florida and the Philipines within the year...

Local Magician's Mother loses battle to Cancer
Sorry to hear that Santos Kidd's Mother passed away this past week after a battle with lung Cancer . We know many in the magic community wish to convey condolences to his family.
For those who know Santos and want to show support, the Service will be Tuesday, Aug 19th at the BRETHEREN OF CHRIST church (an inter-denominational church) at 6 p.m. Inurnment of ashes to follow next day.
The address is 94-133 Pahu St in Waipahu. Burial to follow the next day. You may ask details and express condolences to Santos by contacting him at 542-4997.

As the Snail peels away he yells "..So when I dig out, people will say: LOOK AT THAT "S-CAR-GO!."...

A man and wife came in from the pool to check out their cabin on the cruise ship. The wife entered the bathroom in her bikini, but slipped on a bar of soap and fell into the open commode, completely stuck with head out one way and feet out the other.
"HELP! She screams, GET ME OUT! Rushing in, her husband was unable to get her loose so he called the ships' trusty plumber. As help sped to the scene, the wife realized she was undressed and grabbed the husbands hat for cover. Suddenly plumber Gouveia entered the room and took in the scene, but his face was aghast as he announced: "Bradda, I can get the lady out..." "But that guy with the hat.. he's too far down"...

arena.... The show was set in the middle of the arena with all
tricks and Illusions completely surrounded. (You can't tell from the

noise, Alan did the show wearing earplugs!)......

...On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, ALAN
ARITA performed for 10,000 5th graders during the
D.A.R.E. Day celebration at Stan Sheriff
arena.... The show was set in the middle of the arena with all
tricks and Illusions completely surrounded. (You can't tell from the
HONOLULU ADVERTISER photo above, but because of the screaming
noise, Alan did the show wearing earplugs!)...... ___________________________________________________

GREAT "MAGIC SWAP MEET" ON MAY

Aloha!
Mahalo to those who attended our May 22 meeting,
(including "TOTOY", nice to have you
back!). BOB FESTA'S Pizza tasted great,
arriving Hot & Fresh thanks to FANNY KWAN (No Pizzas
survived). There was a new pizza type Bob let us try that was terrific too
(was it cheese-garlic?) ...
We had a Welcome surprise by Local Magic Longtimer DAVID
NAKASONE, who dropped by with two boxfuls of Magic items to
Donate to IBM for sales! We all want to express thanks to David, (who used to work over
the counter at times with ROBERT WYNDHAM in JIMMY
YOSHIDAS old MAGIC & NOVELTY CENTER on Alakea
Street. Those were the days when every visiting magician stopped by the
over-the-counter shop. I'm not sure how David found out about our MAGIC SWAP
MEET night, but whoever mentioned it to him deserves our thanks as
well. Many of his items were sold on the spot, and the rest were saved by
Webwizard BRYAN YOSHIMOTO as prizes for a proposed meeting at a
nice Restarant later this Summer!

COURSE books auctioned off at bargain prices
Six Volumes of the famous "TARBELL COURSE IN
MAGIC" were auctioned off, (Starting at $1!) and quickly sold for $6 to
$15 each! In all, the club collected close to $190.00 from the
sales. 4-5 Members also brought items to sell, and most everyone went home
with something new, from books and wands, to silks, blendos, Multipyling balls
and other sundry tricks & gimmicks.
There were discussions of the proposed JIM
PACE lecture in September, and only hours later, another
rather famous lecturer emailed regarding a Demo-Lecture next year.
(WHO is this Magic Mystery Man"???.. Stay tuned to this NewsBlog for the
latest updates!)
We can only assume they are discovering IBM through our
Website, or by Word-0f-Mouth among some recent Lecturers, who seemed very happy
with their recent workshops for local Magi).
...There is discussion of possibly enhancing the "Win" of our
Dec 30 "Holiday Magic" COMMANDO CHALLENGE. ... Imagine
the COMMANDO winner getting not only a FREE sponsorship to
JEFF MCBRIDES "MASTERCLASS", but full or partial VEGAS travel
as well? Right now its's just an idea, but It would be a "first" if
we can find solutions that work for everyone. ...Is there a way to
do this without dipping much (or at all) into the club coffers? Anyone out
there with sponsorship ideas or connections to Travel companies, suggestions are
welcome! In the meantime, we've got 6 Months to work on the

CLASSES
...Do you often have people ask where they (or their children) can
go to learn magic? Along with the MAGIC CLASSES taught at Punahou (Usually
with KEN NOYLE, CURTIS KAM and BRAD KERWIN),
MIKE WONG usually teaches in the Community College system, and
of course there is Hawaii's S.Y.M. coached by JIMMY ZUKEMURA, RON
ISHIMARU and others at ZUKES MAGIC &
JOKES...
...The IBM's own FREE SUMMER MAGIC CLASS
Series begins every 4th THURSDAY of the month in June, July &
August, 6-7pm at the KALIHI-PALAMA Library. Summer is especially
busy for our free class. Pass the word to family and friends,
it's a great Summer family activity (Teaching the first JUNE
Class will be Mike Ching)...
...For the past year, several members have suggested IBM expand on
the free classes by starting a Young Magicians program. (Not everyone who
wants to learn magic is able to find knowledgeable teachers, this would be
one way of making good instruction available to those seriously
interested)...
...One suggestion is to find another meeting night at KALIHI LIBRARY
(or other location) for an expanded Magic class without the early start time
that makes it hard for some families to attend. We have already floated
the Idea with some IBM brass and are looking into existing programs...
...IBM has worked hard to provide shows and opportunities for young
magicians to perform in an experienced show environment and even get on TV (the
last "HOLIDAY MAGIC" show at Jikoen Hongwanji was filmed
by "JEN & FRIENDS" and broadcast clip-style on
OC-16). Helping new Magic students could mean more would
have the opportunity to perform (the BEST way to learn), a real plus for those
in the Community who love the art...

DIDJA KNOW?...
...The "Look" of the "BURGER KING" character in the
2004+ ads to present day Is based largely on the original human actor to
play the "Mystical, Magical Burger King" in the 1980s. His name is
TONY HASSINI, and he and MARK WILSON created the
Magical effects used in the '80s campaign. Hassini is reportedly
still active in magic today...

of Hawaii's Junior Magicians at the NEW BABY EXPO, Sunday May
18th. Scheduled show time is 11a.m. to 12 noon on the Mainstage area.

...ARRRRRRRR MATEY! Lookin fer some flashy
manipulation coins, Mighty Cheap?!? Try the FARRELLS
"Treasure Chest" in the stuffed toy & curio section. For $2.99 for a
small pouch, you can fill 'er with as many Gold Pirate coins as she'll hold (and
still close)! The Gold metal alloy "Doubloons" are silver dollar sized
(about 1.5 inches), with "Doubloons 1587" and coat of arms on one side, and
either a Spanish Galleon, Pirate Captain, or the Classic Skull n Bones on the
back. They look and handle much better than lightweight plastic "play
doublouns". We found these at Pearlridge, check other branches of the
franchise...
We managed to stuff a loose bunch of 22 of em in on the first try,
but figure you can get in around 30 with a little planning. For $4.99 you
can buy the large bag that holds, uh, ...??? Ideal for stage Misers Dream,
or Close up Matrix assembly or other theme Pirate routines. They give off
a nice "Ring" when clinked, and best of all, at this price they're cheap enough
to be given away as souvenirs!...
Hans KlokKLOK'D OUT...
If you haven’t seen HANS KLOK’S Illusion Extravaganza “HANS KLOK’S THE BEAUTY OF MAGIC”, it’s now officially too late. The Multimillion Dollar production closed a few months back due to poor sales. Feedback from magicians at large seemed to indicate the show just never found it’s footing or style. A revolving door of co-stars didn’t help.
Initially, CARMEN ELECTRA was slated for
female lead, but apparently quit early in the run because she didn’t know the
Magic would require “so much work”. New
hire PAMELA ANDERSON was less of a Diva, but the storyline (Loosely based on
Hans own life in magic) might have come off as too self-absorbed….(something
magicians have been accused of far too often).

article describes changes in the HALEKOA entertainment lineup

PRODUCTIONS Hula/Luau revue. Mauricios' production is now
called "MAGIC UNDER THE MOONLIGHT" (Instead of "Tuesday Night
Magic") as it takes place in the LUAU GARDENS area while the
BANYAN SHOWROOM continues renovation. Mark mentions
that the show is bigger than before, with larger Illusions, Dove productions and
strolling magic...

On March 11, about 15 Hawaii
magicians paid homage to one of the all-time great magicians from Hawaii. It was
Jimmy Yoshida's 88th birthday and although moving a little slow , his humor was
still evident. He was accompanied by Aggie, his wife. Harvey "Mr. O" Ouchi,
organized the party at Tony Roma's in Pearl City.
Several magicians performed
tricks in honor of Jimmy. Mr. O did an old trick that he got from Jimmy years
ago called the "Black Box." The Black Box features a small silver disc which
appears to penetrate the top of a black box repeatedly and amazingly.
Mike Ching brought an old old
squared circle that he got from Jimmy many many years ago when Jimmy owned his
own magic shop. What memories! Doc Brown did a few routines and Curtis Kam did
an amazing coins across routine for Jimmy.
Fanny Kwan made several balloon
sculptures to top off the party. Glen Bailey was actually working that night
doing table magic for the customers, but wait! We're customers, right? Glen did
several routines including some silks and cards.
Everyone had a great time and
besides, it was a good excuse to get together to share some magic. Happy
Birthday, Jimmy and may you have many more! Aloha. -Harvey

OKA, mother of MARVIN OKA a very active and popular
magician ("THE MAGIC OF HAWAII'S OWN, MARVIN") here in the
80s and early 90s. With his exotic Bird & Illusion Show, Marvin Oka
was an extremely talented student of JIMMY YOSHIDA, ALAN
OKAWA, BOBBY ACOBA, and the late, legendary
music/entertainment producer BILL MURATA. Marvin now
lives in Australia, where he is reported to be very active as an "NLP"
(Neuro-Linguistic Programming) mentor. Friends
