...Very sorry to hear of the passing of JIM HUTCHISON,
well known Island Choreographer and Director. Jim was 75 and died of
Cancer of the Bladder. "Hutch" gave advice to a number of local
magicians and Variety events. He and then-wife (& still friend)
Wisa 'D Orso began their careers on the east coast and were featured
dancers in many of the biggest shows of the 50s and 60s': "The Ed Sullivan Show", Jackie Gleason presents THE HONEYMOONERS", "The Gary Moore Show" and many others. For decades Jim was a featured director with many theaters, most notably DIAMOND HEAD THEATER. He was one of the original production artist with the MAGIC OF POLYNESIA. "AQUA RON" JOANNIS ON KNHL EVENING NEWS...
...Hawaii magic enthusiast RON JOANNIS has been away from the Magic Club scene for awhile, but hasn't been out of the limelight.. J
oannis appeared on the April 9 telecast of KHNL NEWS 8 at 6" on the segment called "DOES IT WORK?!?". Ron, an avid gardner, talks about his experience with the new "self-watering" ornamental spheres known on TV as "AQUA GLOBES" .
He found issues with the glass balls with long tapered stems which,
(once filled and pressed into soil) were supposed to continuously water plants with little care from the owner.
Joannis say his reality was: 1) The narrow stem openings were difficult to fill from the tap, 2) The ends often plugged with soil, failing to dispense water at all. 3) When tapped to dislodge soil, the long, delicate glass stems often shattered... worker and video producer is definitely coming, and others I can't
recall right now. Coz wants to work Waikiki to pay for his trip, and
thinks he could teach a thing or two to the local street magicians.
I'll bet he can...
...I managed to lecture on an obscure coin effect that's supposedly "underground" but is actually one of the most popular tricks among serious coin guys. It seems everyone has a take on it, and nobody's inclined to share, since the point is to fool other magicians.
...My buddy KENT GUNN has designed a cups and balls routine intended to fool magicians as well. It's called the "FUN SHOP CUPS AND BALLS" and you can find the performance on YOUTUBE under that title: click here >> He did the first part of the lecture, I batted second...
There was a camera crew touring the dealer's room. At first, I thought they were the local news, doing the usual "magic convention in town" story. Turned out that it was THE TRAVEL CHANNEL shooting a spot. So I gave them a pitch pretty much like the ones above, and they shot Kent's routine and my spiel about "tricks magicians do only for other magicians". They went on to cover BILL PALMERS' "CUPS & BALLS MUSEUM", part of which had been transported to the convention. Bill said he thinks that the end result of his segment is that they think the museum is a permanent display in Las Vegas.
...Went to the GOLDEN NUGGET, where MICHAEL SKINNER used to perform. All of that section of downtown is now a covered mall. Weird.
...DAVID KAPLAN did a great lecture on comedy magic on stage. How to develop original material, how to manage multiple sound cues and other stuff yourself, and he played an inspirational tune on the turkey baster.
...This W.M.S. saw the return of RUDY COBY, who did his legs act,
then MC'd (and saved) the opening stage show. JASON LATIMER (now going
by "LATIMER" only) did a terrific levitation in which he, the couch,
the hoop and the girl (while floating) all rotated 360 degrees.
...The adult contest featured lots and lots of card being produced from the "air". Many sizes, many ways, not a lot of reasons. A lot of folks liked a thimble and wand manipulator, too. But the winner was a Hungarian named "SOMA".
...STEVE BROOKS and partners announced the launch of "TENYO ELITE" featuring classic TENYO items made the way you wished they were made in the first place. Anodized aluminum and engraving replaces plastic and decals. They were showing off, but not selling yet, "SOFT COINS" "THE MOON SPINNER", "THE BLUE CRYSTAL" and a couple of others. Eventually, all of your favorites will be produced.
...JASON FLEMING and BRAD KERWIN went to see "CRISS ANGEL BELIEVE". There was one guy at the convention who said it was the best magic show he'd ever seen, and everyone else thought that guy needed therapy. Others went to "STEPHANIE, PRINCESS OF MAGIC". The guys who went to see "MAC KING", "NATHAN BURTON", "PENN & TELLER" or "KA" came back happy.
...Everyone who's anyone asked about JIMMY YOSHIDA, and wished him well. JOHNNY THOMPSON goes back so far, he asked about JIMMY KANE.
...KRISTI TOGUCHI back in Vegas from an appearance with THE PENDRAGONS in Rhode Island. Things are looking very good for her.
...There is a huge construction project in the middle of town that is just stopped. No one can afford to keep it going. A lot of the newer hotels have just put up a second set of rooms, i.e. "ENCORE" at the WYNN, and THE hotel added to MANDALAY BAY. Huge sections of these new rooms are closed off, because nobody's coming to fill them..
...Me, I didn't even go outside the hotel until the convention was over. I had a room on the 13th floor. I thought they didn't do that.

This workshop hosted by STEVE KISSELL features some of the best children entertainers in the country including “MAMA CLOWN” (MARCELLA MURAD), TRIXIE BOND, DAVE RISLEY, TOM KING, RALPH METZLER, and many more. (Last year Glen and Alan Arita attended this session and reported valuable insight into performing shows for families). JIMMY YOSHIDAs' Birthday coming up in March (9? 13?), maybe the clubs have a nice idea for a dinner like last year?... All accounts say KAULANA'S show "IGNITE" was well recieved, the show incorporated Magic and Dance...

..."DOC" DAVID BROWN (known to the magic community here as "The Great Davidio") featured in the current (February
2009) issue of HONOLULU magazine as on of Oahus' top 200 Dentists. Doc began a small clinic in Palama in 1975 and soon created the Temple Valley Dental Group.
What makes the Award special is that all Dentists featured were voted
on by their peers, (other Dentists). Brown is recognized for his work
in general Dentistry, and when he is not at the office, he jogs, sails
(he has taken several Famous Magicians and performers on tours of Kaneohe Bay: Ronn Lucas, Losanders & Luna ShImada, Michael Ammar & more), Dave enjoys doing shows for families and libraries with his trademark "Dancing Chicken" act....

...Fun first meeting at the local IBM, about 25 attended including 3 holdovers from the MAGIC BASICS Class (taught by KEKOA / MICHAEL ERICKSON, (the new IBM Secretary who will soon be emailing in our Ring Reports, -Look for them in the future on TLR!)... "DUES ARE DUE" Says continuing Treasurer AL CHOCK (in fact, the next time you say "Hello" to AL, he'll probably answer "Your dues are due", so unvelcro the wallet and give Al the $15. For BOB FESTAS' Great Pizza, the latest News, Tips and Tricks, it's a mighty easy investment... BRYAN YOSHIMOTO is of course the new IBM President, and after a brief unanimous confirmation vote (the entire slate of Officers was approved), Bryan proceeded to take over just 5 minutes into the meeting... RICHARD BAUTISTA is our new Vice-President (he brought along his son as the "Official Pick-a-Card kid" of the evening)... A lot of good magic shared this evening, almost everyone did something.

..Every Monday at 8pm, Magicians, TiVos, DVR's and VCRs tune in to "MASTERS OF ILLUSION" on K-FVE (locally), the MyNetwork Channel. "M.O.T." is an hour of crisply shot Illusions performed for a REAL LIVE AUDIENCE....

bunch of shows. emphasis is on contemporary performers, the New and
Different.
It's an almost old-fashioned style that shows off faces that are fresh to the lay public. Everyone from Neo-Classico JASON BYRNE, to genial Odd Scientist KEVIN JAMES, to unapologetic Goth-Freakazoid DAN SPERRY to the indefine

After a few fits and starts with trial specials, producer GAY BLACKSTONE (widow of HARRY BLACKSTONE JR.) and her crew have settled into a very clean and commercial format the family can enjoy. Just in time for the Recession, at last, good clean entertainment in your living room again.
This series is probably the best thing to happen for Magic in a very long time... Everything from Grand illusion to Street Magic to Comedy to Manipulation to Audience participation to Escape are featured. The series brings back the feel of the great "WORLDS' GREATEST MAGIC" Specials of the 1990's, that were so beautifully assembled by the late GARY OULETTE...
Go "Masters of Illusion"! We're sure of one thing.... with all the professional Magic Talent in Las Vegas, It'll never run out of material.
HAWAII'S GLEN BAILEY IN "LOST" ( FEBRUARY 18TH ) ...
...The rumors are true and now it can be told... Back in October 2008, a series of fast auditions were held in Diamond Head Studios by the casting director for hit ABC series "LOST",
(now in the process of winding up the series arc). Several local
performers were amongst those considered. Ultimately, Hawaii Magician
and past SAM/IBM President GLEN BAILEY was selected for
the part of a magician . This past week, ABC
announced that particular episode will air Wednesday, February 18th on (local affiliate) KITV, Oceanic Cable channel 06... More details of the shoot can be revealed AFTER the airdate, but for now, Baileys' contract precludes him mentioning any
details of the scene...

...Is the name of a new Video-Movie by Comic JAMIE KENNEDY
about how "Circuit" Comedians (and other entertainers) deal with people
who harass from the audience... Ever had a heckler? Not as common in
Hawaii, but they do happen. These are people who direct negative or
disruptive comments at a performer due to prejudices, boredom, a bad
mood, a bad attitude, bad judgement, the need to be heard, or most often just plain drunkeness. Does the performer Ignore
a persistent Heckler? Let him continue and hope the audience shouts
him down? Defuse him with an upbeat joke or zing him/her with a series
of snappy & devastating put-down lines? See what various comics
say about people who try to HiJack a performance. Interview clips
include LOUIE ANDERSON. CARROT TOP, BILL MAHR, JON LOVITZ, CRISS ANGEL, LEWIS BLACK and more...
"HECKLER" is actually not entirely about loudmouths in the audience, but "legitimate" critics as well, and how their printed attacks sting (and sometimes help) performers, (who are not generally thick-skinned to begin with). The film is "Hosted" by Kennedy, who interviews his print-critics face to face. Some are cordial and explain they are working hard to be fair, some are lethal and happy to admit that clever or vicious reviews sell Newspapers and get attention. One particularly nasty writer takes glee in telling the comic face-to-face where to go, and as you might guess, there is more than one critic/performer brawl caught onscreen. "Heckler" is not always easy to watch. Still, for solo performers, it may at least help us understand why some people react to entertainers as they do...

She was a talented baker and decorator who worked at Liliha Bakery, Camp Timberline and Punahou Schools. She often showed up at Franks performances and many benefits. Frank credits her with shaping his style of humor. A one-time babysitter to IBM Pres. Mike Ching, she is remembered as a positive and energetic woman who decorated the Delimas' Pauoa home for every holiday and occasion. Services pending. "BELIEVE" ... FOR 11 YEARS...
...CRISS ANGELS' "BELIEVE" is now officially open at LUXOR in Vegas. Billed as "A Journey inside the Mind of Criss Angel" it is a montage of nontraditional Illusions, Dance and Story. The look is Gothic and apparently heavily influenced by Renaissance artist HERIONIMOUS BOSCH.. The feel is dark and Victorian. The Dance routines are Eclectic, mixed HipHop, Contemporary and Modern...
Several promotional videos are now available on You TUBE, just enter "Criss Angel Believe". There is great effort made to ensure the show is "Edgy". One of the dance numbers shown is blown up in archaic script (like an old-time movie) and is titled "A Tribute to all the Rabbits who've died at the hands of incompetent Magicians". Audience comments on YouTube from those who've seen BELIEVE are mixed. Is this the future of Magic? See for yourself as Angel has signed with LUXOR/CIRQUE for the next 11 years... DAVID BLAINE is being roasted in the Magic Community for a "Dive" that went nowhere. Sites like MAGIC CAFE and more are buzzing with reactions ranging from disbelief to dissappointment over the final stunt that left many confused...
After 3 days suspended upside down, Blaine was supposed to have "Dived" onto a graphic art target 40 feet below him with some sort of unnanounced surprise to follow. 7.5 million viewers sat through 2+ hours of live broadcast waiting some type of amazing climax.... which never really came.
Blaine explained this morning on REGIS & KELLY that he was supposed to have dived downward (we gather with accompanying pyrothechnics) and been "saved" at the last second by huge Flotilla of overhead balloons that would whip him out into the darkness and out of site. Instead, winds delayed the drop, and when he finally did fall no lights of pyrotechnics appeared. Millions of viewers around the world saw a safety tethercord slow his descent and The magician bobbing around the ground waiting for the balloons to be manually released (which they finally were).
Blaine Notes that winds delayed the ending, but that ABC insisted he wait for a window of opportunity and continue the stunt. Finally David took the fall so as not to delay anticipation any longer, and the outcome was not what anyone would have hoped for. The (obviously well-rehearsed announcer) still yelled over long-shots of the crowd "WOW! David Blaine has Dissapeared into the night!" Uh...Hah?...
GREG GABAYLO just performed Hypnotism at the 58th HILO COUNTY FAIR, Sept 19 & 20th. Gabaylo says he has Hypnotism shows lined up for California, Vegas, Florida and the Philipines within the year...

Local Magician's Mother loses battle to Cancer
Sorry to hear that Santos Kidd's Mother passed away this past week after a battle with lung Cancer . We know many in the magic community wish to convey condolences to his family.
For those who know Santos and want to show support, the Service will be Tuesday, Aug 19th at the BRETHEREN OF CHRIST church (an inter-denominational church) at 6 p.m. Inurnment of ashes to follow next day.

Cancer of the Bladder. "Hutch" gave advice to a number of local
magicians and Variety events. He and then-wife (& still friend)
Wisa 'D Orso began their careers on the east coast and were featured
dancers in many of the biggest shows of the 50s and 60s': "The Ed Sullivan Show", Jackie Gleason presents THE HONEYMOONERS", "The Gary Moore Show" and many others. For decades Jim was a featured director with many theaters, most notably DIAMOND HEAD THEATER. He was one of the original production artist with the MAGIC OF POLYNESIA. oannis appeared on the April 9 telecast of KHNL NEWS 8 at 6" on the segment called "DOES IT WORK?!?". Ron, an avid gardner, talks about his experience with the new "self-watering" ornamental spheres known on TV as "AQUA GLOBES" .
He found issues with the glass balls with long tapered stems which,
(once filled and pressed into soil) were supposed to continuously water plants with little care from the owner. Joannis say his reality was: 1) The narrow stem openings were difficult to fill from the tap, 2) The ends often plugged with soil, failing to dispense water at all. 3) When tapped to dislodge soil, the long, delicate glass stems often shattered... I'll bet he can... ...I managed to lecture on an obscure coin effect that's supposedly "underground" but is actually one of the most popular tricks among serious coin guys. It seems everyone has a take on it, and nobody's inclined to share, since the point is to fool other magicians.
...My buddy KENT GUNN has designed a cups and balls routine intended to fool magicians as well. It's called the "FUN SHOP CUPS AND BALLS" and you can find the performance on YOUTUBE under that title: click here >> He did the first part of the lecture, I batted second...
There was a camera crew touring the dealer's room. At first, I thought they were the local news, doing the usual "magic convention in town" story. Turned out that it was THE TRAVEL CHANNEL shooting a spot. So I gave them a pitch pretty much like the ones above, and they shot Kent's routine and my spiel about "tricks magicians do only for other magicians". They went on to cover BILL PALMERS' "CUPS & BALLS MUSEUM", part of which had been transported to the convention. Bill said he thinks that the end result of his segment is that they think the museum is a permanent display in Las Vegas.
...Went to the GOLDEN NUGGET, where MICHAEL SKINNER used to perform. All of that section of downtown is now a covered mall. Weird.
...DAVID KAPLAN did a great lecture on comedy magic on stage. How to develop original material, how to manage multiple sound cues and other stuff yourself, and he played an inspirational tune on the turkey baster.
...This W.M.S. saw the return of RUDY COBY, who did his legs act,
then MC'd (and saved) the opening stage show. JASON LATIMER (now going
by "LATIMER" only) did a terrific levitation in which he, the couch,
the hoop and the girl (while floating) all rotated 360 degrees....The adult contest featured lots and lots of card being produced from the "air". Many sizes, many ways, not a lot of reasons. A lot of folks liked a thimble and wand manipulator, too. But the winner was a Hungarian named "SOMA".
...STEVE BROOKS and partners announced the launch of "TENYO ELITE" featuring classic TENYO items made the way you wished they were made in the first place. Anodized aluminum and engraving replaces plastic and decals. They were showing off, but not selling yet, "SOFT COINS" "THE MOON SPINNER", "THE BLUE CRYSTAL" and a couple of others. Eventually, all of your favorites will be produced.
...JASON FLEMING and BRAD KERWIN went to see "CRISS ANGEL BELIEVE". There was one guy at the convention who said it was the best magic show he'd ever seen, and everyone else thought that guy needed therapy. Others went to "STEPHANIE, PRINCESS OF MAGIC". The guys who went to see "MAC KING", "NATHAN BURTON", "PENN & TELLER" or "KA" came back happy.
...Everyone who's anyone asked about JIMMY YOSHIDA, and wished him well. JOHNNY THOMPSON goes back so far, he asked about JIMMY KANE.
...KRISTI TOGUCHI back in Vegas from an appearance with THE PENDRAGONS in Rhode Island. Things are looking very good for her.
...There is a huge construction project in the middle of town that is just stopped. No one can afford to keep it going. A lot of the newer hotels have just put up a second set of rooms, i.e. "ENCORE" at the WYNN, and THE hotel added to MANDALAY BAY. Huge sections of these new rooms are closed off, because nobody's coming to fill them..
...Me, I didn't even go outside the hotel until the convention was over. I had a room on the 13th floor. I thought they didn't do that.

MORE 'VEGAS MAGIC WITH GLEN BAILEY...
Here are my experiences and
observations of the 32nd World Magic Seminar.
1. Loren and I arrived on Friday night.
Saturday we visited the new HOUDINI MAGIC SHOP in the MILE LONG MALL on the
Strip. In front of a restaurant across from the shop were two local
magicians performing street magic. They gave us a flyer for a local magic
show that we attended at 11 PM at the HARLEY DAVIDSON CLUB on the strip. Although
they were handing out lots of flyers only 30 local magicians showed up for the
show. It was a new show being produced by up and coming young magicians.
At the moment there are over 450 magicians living in Las Vegas and performing opportunities are
getting hard to find.
2. This WORLD MAGIC SEMINAR was dedicated to
the Illusion builder JOHN GAUGHAN and there was a nice presentation and history
of his life presented on the last day with personal presentations made by MARK WILSON who brought John into the magic world at the age of 14.
3. One of the high points of this
convention was the Teen Stage Contest. I attended all three days watching
the 13 teen contestants vie for the top awards. The level of the teen
magic has lifted to new heights with some of the acts as good as the adult
competitors. A young teen from Japan took top honors with a Kabuki
umbrella productions act. Second place went to a 19 year old from Chicago
who did a high energy CD production act. And third place to a set
of Japanese brothers age 13 and 14 performing a complete illusion show.
4. I was not impressed with
the dealers room – same guys as last year with not much new to
offer. DIRK LOSANDER was there and he did have his new floating card box. I
bought very few items this year.
5. One of the highlights of the
convention was the close up show featuring our own CURTIS KAM, my good friend from
the Philippines RANNIE (THE BOSS) RAYMUNDO, RAFAEL BENATAR, ERIC JONES, DORIAN RHODELL, and ANTONIO ROMERO. The show was well attended by about 400
magicians and the two large side screens afforded everyone a good view.
6. The INTERNATIONAL STAGE COMPETITION was OK but for some reason no one from the US entered.
Way too many card manipulators. I don’t remember who won.
7. JEFF MCBRIDE had his "MASTER CLASS"
room set up. and it was a bee hive of activity the
entire convention with live TV cast interviews and both young and old magicians
getting in on the interview action.
8. Notable magicians that visited
the dealers room or daily shows included CRISS ANGEL, RUDY COBY, GARY DARWIN, MARK WILSON,
the LARSENS from the Magic Castle, HARRY MONTI, SIEGFRIED, LANCE BURTON, THE GAMESTERS, MICHAEL CLOSE, JODY BARON from Maui, JOHNNY THOMPSON, KRISTI TOGUCHI from Hawaii, and JOHN KENNEDY.
9. All in all I enjoyed the
convention.

This workshop hosted by STEVE KISSELL features some of the best children entertainers in the country including “MAMA CLOWN” (MARCELLA MURAD), TRIXIE BOND, DAVE RISLEY, TOM KING, RALPH METZLER, and many more. (Last year Glen and Alan Arita attended this session and reported valuable insight into performing shows for families). 2009) issue of HONOLULU magazine as on of Oahus' top 200 Dentists. Doc began a small clinic in Palama in 1975 and soon created the Temple Valley Dental Group.
What makes the Award special is that all Dentists featured were voted
on by their peers, (other Dentists). Brown is recognized for his work
in general Dentistry, and when he is not at the office, he jogs, sails

HAWAII'S GLEN BAILEY IN "LOST" ( FEBRUARY 18TH ) ...
...The rumors are true and now it can be told... Back in October 2008, a series of fast auditions were held in Diamond Head Studios by the casting director for hit ABC series "LOST",
(now in the process of winding up the series arc). Several local
performers were amongst those considered. Ultimately, Hawaii Magician
and past SAM/IBM President GLEN BAILEY was selected for
the part of a magician . This past week, ABC
announced that particular episode will air Wednesday, February 18th on (local affiliate) KITV, Oceanic Cable channel 06... More details of the shoot can be revealed AFTER the airdate, but for now, Baileys' contract precludes him mentioning any

"HECKLER"
...Is the name of a new Video-Movie by Comic JAMIE KENNEDY
about how "Circuit" Comedians (and other entertainers) deal with people
who harass from the audience... Ever had a heckler? Not as common in
Hawaii, but they do happen. These are people who direct negative or
disruptive comments at a performer due to prejudices, boredom, a bad
mood, a bad attitude, bad judgement, the need to be heard, or most often just plain drunkeness. Does the performer Ignore
a persistent Heckler? Let him continue and hope the audience shouts
him down? Defuse him with an upbeat joke or zing him/her with a series
of snappy & devastating put-down lines? See what various comics
say about people who try to HiJack a performance. Interview clips
include LOUIE ANDERSON. CARROT TOP, BILL MAHR, JON LOVITZ, CRISS ANGEL, LEWIS BLACK and more..."HECKLER" is actually not entirely about loudmouths in the audience, but "legitimate" critics as well, and how their printed attacks sting (and sometimes help) performers, (who are not generally thick-skinned to begin with). The film is "Hosted" by Kennedy, who interviews his print-critics face to face. Some are cordial and explain they are working hard to be fair, some are lethal and happy to admit that clever or vicious reviews sell Newspapers and get attention. One particularly nasty writer takes glee in telling the comic face-to-face where to go, and as you might guess, there is more than one critic/performer brawl caught onscreen. "Heckler" is not always easy to watch. Still, for solo performers, it may at least help us understand why some people react to entertainers as they do...

...Sorry to report, a Dec News story describes how one of DAVID COPPERFIELDs' travelling shows came to an abrupt end when an assistant was hurt in the rotating Fan Blade Illusion with injuries to arm and face. Copperfield immediately brought down the curtain and explained that there was an emergency and that the audience could get their tickets refunded. David and the crew of the show reportedly waited out the emergency operation and David issued a statement where he prays for a speedy recovery... click here for story

...Sorry to report on the passing of PEARL DELIMA Dec 4, Mom to popular Hawaii comedian FRANK DELIMA. She was a talented baker and decorator who worked at Liliha Bakery, Camp Timberline and Punahou Schools. She often showed up at Franks performances and many benefits. Frank credits her with shaping his style of humor. A one-time babysitter to IBM Pres. Mike Ching, she is remembered as a positive and energetic woman who decorated the Delimas' Pauoa home for every holiday and occasion. Services pending. This years "House" was the biggest yet and had the largest staff of
Volunteers. It took Ching & Choy about 12 days to create the
project. Attendees to the free event waited nearly 1.5 hrs in lines

"BELIEVE" ... FOR 11 YEARS...
...CRISS ANGELS' "BELIEVE" is now officially open at LUXOR in Vegas. Billed as "A Journey inside the Mind of Criss Angel" it is a montage of nontraditional Illusions, Dance and Story. The look is Gothic and apparently heavily influenced by Renaissance artist HERIONIMOUS BOSCH.. The feel is dark and Victorian. The Dance routines are Eclectic, mixed HipHop, Contemporary and Modern...
Several promotional videos are now available on You TUBE, just enter "Criss Angel Believe". There is great effort made to ensure the show is "Edgy". One of the dance numbers shown is blown up in archaic script (like an old-time movie) and is titled "A Tribute to all the Rabbits who've died at the hands of incompetent Magicians". Audience comments on YouTube from those who've seen BELIEVE are mixed. Is this the future of Magic? See for yourself as Angel has signed with LUXOR/CIRQUE for the next 11 years... ...Mahalo to RON ISHIMARU who continues as our IBM Regional VP into next year. Ron is now Pres of the Hawaii SAM and head of the SYM (Working with JIMMY ZUKEMURA & others) as well. He is currently producing the lastest SYM recital for family and friends due out this month. With all this to work on, we appreciate his help. BRYAN YOSHIMOTO will succeed the post in late 2009, and is on track to succeed MIKE CHING as IBM President in January '09 also...

DAVID BLAINE is being roasted in the Magic Community for a "Dive" that went nowhere. Sites like MAGIC CAFE and more are buzzing with reactions ranging from disbelief to dissappointment over the final stunt that left many confused...
After 3 days suspended upside down, Blaine was supposed to have "Dived" onto a graphic art target 40 feet below him with some sort of unnanounced surprise to follow. 7.5 million viewers sat through 2+ hours of live broadcast waiting some type of amazing climax.... which never really came.
Blaine explained this morning on REGIS & KELLY that he was supposed to have dived downward (we gather with accompanying pyrothechnics) and been "saved" at the last second by huge Flotilla of overhead balloons that would whip him out into the darkness and out of site. Instead, winds delayed the drop, and when he finally did fall no lights of pyrotechnics appeared. Millions of viewers around the world saw a safety tethercord slow his descent and The magician bobbing around the ground waiting for the balloons to be manually released (which they finally were).
Blaine Notes that winds delayed the ending, but that ABC insisted he wait for a window of opportunity and continue the stunt. Finally David took the fall so as not to delay anticipation any longer, and the outcome was not what anyone would have hoped for. The (obviously well-rehearsed announcer) still yelled over long-shots of the crowd "WOW! David Blaine has Dissapeared into the night!" Uh...Hah?...
GREG GABAYLO just performed Hypnotism at the 58th HILO COUNTY FAIR, Sept 19 & 20th. Gabaylo says he has Hypnotism shows lined up for California, Vegas, Florida and the Philipines within the year...

Local Magician's Mother loses battle to Cancer
Sorry to hear that Santos Kidd's Mother passed away this past week after a battle with lung Cancer . We know many in the magic community wish to convey condolences to his family.
For those who know Santos and want to show support, the Service will be Tuesday, Aug 19th at the BRETHEREN OF CHRIST church (an inter-denominational church) at 6 p.m. Inurnment of ashes to follow next day.
The address is 94-133 Pahu St in Waipahu. Burial to follow the next day. You may ask details and express condolences to Santos by contacting him at 542-4997.
